Liposuction

Dr. Arrington offers liposuction at Atlantic Plastic Surgery for patients who have localized fat that does not respond to diet or exercise. Fat deposits in the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, chin and cheeks can be safely and permanently removed with liposuction. This cosmetic surgery procedure can also be combined with another procedure such as an abdominoplasty or breast reduction. Your unique needs and desires regarding liposuction will be addressed with care during your first consultation with Dr. Arrington.

The Liposuction Procedure
In a liposuction treatment, a local anesthetic will be applied to the area(s) to be treated, and general anesthesia or a sedative will be used if appropriate. A small incision is made, and a cannula (a very thin hollow needle) is gently inserted under the skin. The fat deposits are sucked into a vacuum through a tube connected to the cannula. A number of incision sites may be necessary; for instance, performing liposuction of the thighs may require more incisions than would the neck.

The time necessary for a liposuction procedure also varies with the area being treated and the amount of fat to be removed, but it is usually less than one hour. The incisions, placed in inconspicuous sites whenever possible, may leave scars that are minimal and will fade with time.

After Liposuction
For several days after a liposuction session, the treated area may be swollen and sore. In some cases, the liposuction incisions are temporarily left open to let fluids and residual fat deposits empty out through a drain. Dr. Arrington may have you wear a supportive garment or bandages for a few days.

After the swelling subsides, the results of a liposuction treatment are apparent, and the treated area's appearance will continue to improve over the next few weeks and months.
